Video Chat mit dem Experten
Am 09.Februar, in unserer letzen Sitzung des Seminars, fand eine Videositzung mit Reinhard Donath, der seit 1980 am Gymnasium Ulricianum in Aurich/Ostfriesland Lehrer für Deutsch und Englisch ist, statt. Wir hatten nun 14 Wochen Beschäftigung mit den neuen Medien hinter uns und konnten alle noch übriggebliebenen Fragen stellen.
Herr Donath erzählte uns, dass er bereits 1990 gewisse Email Projekte in Schulen durchführte. Er nutzte das WWW nicht nur im Informatik-, sondern auch im Englischunterricht als Kommunikationsmittel mit internationalen Klassen. Allerdings bezeichnet er dies heute als adäquat. Denn die Motivation der Schüler bei dieser veralteten Form ließ schnell nach, da es sehr lange dauerte bis Antworten zurück kamen. Heute bevorzugt er deshalb eher Plattformen, wie facebook oder Gruppenblogs. Als Beispiel erzählte er von einem anstehenden Schüleraustausch, bei dem die Schüler von vorne herein von sich aus über facebook kommunizieren.
Ebenfalls erwähnt Herr Donath den „learning circle“. Dabei nehmen etwa vier bis sechs Klassen aus verschiedenen Ländern teil und jedes Land verschickt an jede Klasse so genannte „society pockets“. Das sind große Pakete mit Stadtführern, Schulbüchern etc. Einfach alles, was landes- oder städtetypisch ist. Für die Schüler ist es wirklich toll ein solches Paket zu empfangen. Wichtig dabei, ist allerdings eine gute Planung im Voraus.
Die nächste Frage war er darauf bezogen wie Lehrer der älteren Generation mit den Neuen Medien umgehen. Herr Donath’s Einstellung dazu ist ganz klar, dass er der Meinung ist, dass sich kein Lehrer, egal welcher Generation, dagegen wehren sollte. Natürlich kann man niemanden dazu zwingen, aber es ist nicht sehr modern als Lehrer immer noch ohne PC zu leben. Fortbildungen für den Umgang mit PCs im Unterricht gibt es nicht wirklich, aber es ist sehr sinnvoll sich einen Tag zusammen zu setzen und ein Austausch durchzuführen. Beispielsweise über Projekte oder „BBC“, also wie man Nachrichten in den Unterricht einbringen kann. Die Anforderungen an das Lernen und die Qualifikationen haben sich geändert und man sollte mit der Zeit mitgehen.
Eine weitere Frage war, ob die Neuen Medien die Bücher irgendwann wegschieben oder ersetzen werden. Er bezeichnete die Neuen Medien als didaktisch guten Ersatz für Bücher, da man einfach mit dem Web viel mehr Möglichkeiten hat. Aber seiner Meinung nach werden die Lehrbücher nie komplett ersetzt, da sie eine gute Basis beinhalten. Aber es hängt eben alles von der Ausstattung der Schule ab, also inwiefern die Schule mit PCs ausgestattet ist. Aber das Wichtigste ist es, immer auf die face-to-face Kommunkation zu achten.
In der Schule, wo Herr Donath tätig ist gibt es ein Multi Media Center, der „Bahnanum“ genannt wird. Dieser Raum ist mit acht runden Tischen ausgestattet, sodass jeder jeden sieht. In der Mitte gibt es einen Beamer. Die Schüler dieser Schule verwalten diese Räume. Da dies immer sehr skeptisch gesehen wird, betont er, dass dort alles funktionsfähig ist und keine Schäden durch die Schüler entstehen. Auch die Schülerzeitung oder Abizeitung wird dort produziert.
Als die Frage nach den Kosten einer solchen Multi Media Ausstattung gestellt wird, erklärt Donath, dass es vor zehn Jahren für alle Schulen die Möglichkeit für Internetanschluss gab. Ebenfalls wurden alle Schulen mit PCs ausgestattet, da das Web nun im Curriculum stand. Wer also will, hat auch eine gute Ausstattung. Wenn allerdings eine Schule die digitale Welt ausschließt, ist dies ein großer Fehler.
Bezüglich des Unterrichts mit dem PC erläutert Donath ebenfalls, wie man die Kontrolle behält und sicher geht, dass die Schüler nicht nebenbei im Internet surfen. Für ihn ist es wichtig, dass immer Ergebnisse erbracht werden müssen. Man muss durch den Raum gehen und wenn doch mal ein Schüler ins Netz ausreist, einfach mal für fünf Minuten den Stecker ziehen.
Herr Donath sorgt in seinen Klassen für Medienerziehung. Wenn er gewisse Bilder von Schülern auf Plattformen im Netz entdeckt, spricht er sie auf die Auswirkungen an und sorgt für das Verschwinden des Bildes. Er persönlich hält „twitter“ für den Unterricht eher überflüssig.
Somit waren die meisten Fragen gestellt und ein sehr informatives Videogespräch ging zu ende. Wir bedanken uns sehr für die Beantwortung all unserer Fragen.

The idea of drawing might seem very basic but I reckon it could be a good activity to do with a 5th, maybe 6th class and in primary school. The website is all written in English.
Students get to learn some new vocabulary concerning the use of the WWW without really thinking about it (learning by doing). As words like “draw” or “delete” are probably new to them, they have to find out what they mean by klicking on those words to see what happens. This way they wont just learn the German translation, meaning students learn a vocabulary in the “traditonal” way (e.g. to delete means “löschen”), but mainly internalize the English language. They also get to learn how to use the new words in a context.Instead of being aware of “having to learn” students will enjoy the activity.
But it´s not only new vocabulary students get confronted with. They also have to deal with sentence structure and questions like “Are you sure you want to clear the scene?”, where at first sight they wont know the meaning but will find out by trying.
After students finish drawing their picture they can email it to each other or even invite friends per email and then work together. Basic internet skills are introduced here.
The teacher could let the students write down the words they didnt understand, so that you have a collection of new vocabulary at the end of the lesson. The students could then guess their meaning in class.
I would recommend not to do this acitivity for longer than one lesson, otherwise students might get bored.
How to learn English and stop hunger at the same time
Isn’t it a great idea to learn English vocabulary and grammar and at the same time end hunger across the world?
The website www.freerice.com makes it possible! For each answer you get right, they donate 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme to help end hunger. Up to now over 75 billion grains have been donated already!
Besides English grammar and vocabulary, you can also test your knowledge 
about art, chemistry, geography, maths and languages (Spanish, German, French, Italian).
Try it out and do a good deed for the day!
School Programs and New Media?!
In our last in-class session this monday, we did a little internet research on several school programs. We we’re curious to find out if and how the individual programs included new media. The research task was followed by a discussion about our ideal school program with respect new media. Finally, we agreed on five individual points we would include in our imaginary program:
1. Computer Driving License: Pupils should get familiarized with the basic technical skills and rules, which are necessary concerning the right use of a computer.
2. Obligatory Teacher Training: The teachers should be able to handle the computer and be up to date concerning current it-trends.
3. Subject Specific Curricula: New media should be used meaningful and hence subject specific.
4. Evaluation: New media use should be evaluated regularly. This opens up for possible improvements.
5. Media Access For All Students: Each student should have an individual internet account or respectively media access.
In our opinion, schools should include these five points into their programs and invest money into them. The five points are preconditions for a meaningful use of new media in the context of school.
What to do with 30.000€ ?!?
In our session on January 26th we collected ideas about what to do if we had 30.000 € to spend for new media equipment in schools because this is a topic currently being talked about.
From building a cinema to leasing the newest laptops -there were lots of ideas and several very good proposals. Mostly money was spent on microphones, webcams and headsets so students would be able to practice their English speech by talking to native-speaking students in other countries for instance. They would also have the chance to tape their own speech and then have it analyzed in order to learn the right pronunciation.
Also LCD-projectors and voice recorders would make a great investment. Of course, money should be spent on more computers. I reckon leasing computers would be better than buying them as you would always get the newest version. Besides you wouldn´t have to spend lots of money on maintenance and care of hard- and software.
What does ice cream have to do with social media?
The website www.commoncraft.com presents short,simple and free mini-tutorials which cover subjects “in plain English”. The videos were created with great care, using paper cut-outs which makes watching the videos a lot of fun! 
Common Craft is a small company owned by Lee and Sachi LeFever in Seattle, Washington, USA. The company was founded by Lee in 2003 as an online community consulting company. They started making videos in 2007 with the first video: RSS in Plain English. Since then, they have published many more eductaional videos in which they explain current issues that are important in the 21st century.
In the videos on technology section you can find videos dealing with twitter, blogs, computer software, podcasting, wikis, RSS and many other features of New Media. Watching Common Craft videos may give you a few ideas for some class projects. Your students could, for example, make this type of video without much more than a white board and a Web cam by themselves to explain certain issues.
